Things to Do

If you enjoy heritage, South Derbyshire has plenty to explore, from Georgian market towns and tales of Bonnie Prince Charlie to links with Australia, medieval lock-ups and grand stately homes.

Heritage and Pottery

Pottery is an important part of South Derbyshire’s heritage, linking the area with markets around the world. A visit to The Magic Attic archives in Swadlincote brings this story to life through newspaper clippings, research articles and a wealth of photographs. Iconic pieces such as blue and white striped Cornishware, Mason Cash mixing bowls and traditional pet ware can still be bought today, even though the original pottery factories have long since closed.

Active Days Out

There is plenty to keep active visitors busy, including snow sports, golf, canoeing, geocaching, horse riding, archery, sailing, cycling, orienteering and climbing. Younger visitors can also enjoy soft play areas and adventure playgrounds at local leisure and forestry centres.

Gardens and Green Spaces

South Derbyshire is also home to some wonderful gardens, including Elvaston Castle, the Bluebell Arboretum at Smisby and Melbourne Hall. There are also many beautiful privately owned gardens open each year through the National Gardens Scheme.

Attractions Nearby

If you have time to explore a little further, the atmospheric National Memorial Arboretum, Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, Conkers, the National Brewery Centre and many other attractions are all just a short journey away.

Woodland Walks and Forest Experiences

No visit would be complete without a walk or cycle ride through the newly created and ancient woodlands of the National Forest. For something a little different, you can even enjoy a walk with an alpaca and take in a landscape that reflects both South Derbyshire’s character and its future.
