Mythaholme & Memorials
This five and a half mile walk explores some of the older and more recent history of part of the Trent Valley.
It passes mediaeval earthworks, the 18th century Trent and Mersey canal, 19th and 20th Century mineral workings and the 21st Century plantings of the National Memorial Arboretum, themselves commemorating recent history.
The terrain you’ll encounter on this walk is unsurfaced paths, tracks, farmland with some tarmacked sections. There will also be some stiles. Overall, sturdy footwear is recommended.
The key points of interest on this walk are:
- The National Memorial Arboretum
- A living tribute to all the service men and women who died during the 20th century. There are now over 400 memorials within a setting of 25,000 trees.
- Alrewas
- One of the oldest recorded communities in England, with a church dating back to the 9th Century.
- Wychnor
- The east arch of the tower of St Leonard’s Church, dating back to the 13th-14th Centuries
- Gravel Workings
- Gravel pits that have produced important archaeological finds dating back to the Ice Age
- Mythaholme
- The Mythaholme footbridge, deriving it’s name from the Old English term for the mouth of a river.
