Three Churches Circular Walk
Circular walk starting at St Michael’s Church, Sutton-on-the-Hill. There is a choice of two routes set among the hills north of Etwall in South Derbyshire. The longer route takes you past All Saints Church in Dalbury and All Saints Church in Trusley. The longer route takes approximately 3 hours and the short route about 1 hour 50 minutes to complete.
The walk takes you through countryside where there are a number of stiles and fields with horses or cattle. Some steeper climbs are involved and note that parts of the route are liable to flooding.
For a more detailed map you are recommended to refer to Ordnance Survey Explorer 128 (Derby & Burton upon Trent).
St Michael’s Church retains its 14th Century features. On a prominent rural hill site it is impressive and a dominant feature in the landscape for miles around, particularly when lit up at night. Look for the crinkle-crankle (serpentine) wavy wall forming the western boundary of the gardens at Sutton Hall along the route. Take in the fine views of Dalbury and Ashe Hall (Tara Kadampa Buddhist Centre) at Etwall with its beautiful grounds to relax in. Everyone is welcome to visit and there’s also a café – open seven days a week. A visit to All Saints Church in Dalbury includes a c1200 stained glass figure of St Michael and is probably the oldest glass in Derbyshire. All Saints Church in Trusley retains some of its original features including the largest collection of funeral hatchments in Derbyshire and a ‘Maiden’s Garland’ (virgin’s funeral crown).
