Moira Furnace Museum & Country Park
Moira Furnace is a 19th Century iron-making blast furnace on the banks of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Canal – possibly one of the most important blast furnaces remaining in existence in Europe.
In the Museum’s ‘bridge loft’, discover how three unassuming materials dug out of the ground were, and still are, combined together to make a world changing material, iron. Don’t forget to check out the canal section to find out more on the turbulent history of the top section of the Ashby Canal.
Step into faithful recreations of the cottage industries that thrived on our site and in the buildings in times gone by. Walk through J. Swain’s cobblers shop and discover the tools of the trade. Enter into the dress makers studio to see the beautiful work the ladies of the time created, then, pour over the stories and pictures from the people who called the furnace their home until the 1970s.
Enter the country park and take the towpaths and woodland walks to explore the lime kilns and discover a variety of wildlife found on site. During April to September see the canal from a unique view point on a leisurely trip on the beautiful barge, The Joseph Wilkes.
Refreshments are available in the retail/craft area adjoining the main car park. Craft studios include Sable Studio Artist and Moira Lane Pottery. Large carpark facilities and toilets on site.
