There is something special about South Derbyshire, as someone who has lived here all her life I think I know the area
Whether you’re discovering it for the first time, have lived here all your life, or are returning to visit family and friends, this is a place full of hidden gems, beautiful countryside, fascinating history and a real sense of community.
I’m delighted to have recently joined the team at the Visitor Information Centre, and over the coming months I’ll be sharing everything that makes South Derbyshire such a fantastic place to explore. The team here are already doing an amazing job and I’m looking forward to working alongside them.
This blog will be much more than a list of places to visit. It will be a space where we’ll showcase local businesses, celebrate community events, uncover lesser-known walks and attractions, highlight seasonal activities, and hopefully inspire you to try somewhere new.
From peaceful woodland walks and riverside adventures to family attractions, independent cafés, historic villages and local markets, there is so much happening across the district throughout the year.
We’ll also bring you practical ideas for:
- Free days out
- Dog-friendly walks and attractions
- Family activities during school holidays
- Accessible places to visit
- Food and drink recommendations
- Walking and cycling routes
- Local events and festivals
- Hidden gems that even local residents may not know about
One thing you’ll quickly discover is that South Derbyshire isn’t somewhere you simply pass through—it’s somewhere worth stopping for.
Behind every attraction is a passionate business owner, volunteer or community group helping make this area such a welcoming destination. We hope to tell some of those stories too.
If you’re planning a visit, looking for something different to do this weekend, or simply want to fall in love with the area all over again, you’re in the right place.
This is just the beginning.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be visiting attractions, meeting local businesses, sharing our favourite walking routes, highlighting upcoming events and giving you plenty of ideas to make the most of everything South Derbyshire has to offer.
Thank you for joining us—we’re looking forward to exploring with you.
See you soon,
Teresa
