Barrow upon Trent is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog if you’ve got one looking like it needs a holiday). In the middle of these green surroundings, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site makes a great base for holidays in this quiet corner of South Derbyshire.

Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block, a washing-up area and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking. Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot, or by heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city’s range of restaurants and takeaways.

Need to burn off last night’s meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).
