Impressive 12th Century church overlooking Melbourne Pool
St Michael with St Mary’s Church is a Grade I listed parish church, and existed when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. The current building dates from the early part of the 12th Century, but why so large and imposing a church was built in Melbourne is a mystery.
It has the feel of a ‘miniature cathedral’ and indeed there was a royal castle in the town at one time. Connections with King Henry I and Adelulf (or Aethelwulf) have also been suggested, but we cannot be certain of the real reason Melbourne Church was built in such a grand manner. Whoever was responsible has left a splendid example of 12th Century architecture.
