The quiet waterways of the Midlands are a lovely spot to while away a few days in. With double decks and big windows on this ingenious conversion, you’ll be able to sit and feel the peace, as birds come flitting over the water or swooping in to land. There are trails down the river for hiking or you could head for the canal for some easy cycling, including a three-mile wander to the Dragon at Willington, where you can stop for a pint on the banks before wobbling back.

You can also hire a canoe from the on-site Trent Adventures and explore by paddle power, try a bit of wild swimming in Anchor Church caves or ask owners Robin and Jose about picking up some green woodworking skills.

Jennings is also a beautiful space for idling a little. The snug raised bed is a king-size nest, perfect for long lie-ins, the bathroom has a gas-heated shower and compost loo and the kitchen a proper oven and hobs, so you can cook up fine meals or make a quick cup of coffee in the morning. It’s been kitted out with flair and style but a loving nod to its 60s design, including reuse of some of the original fittings. The double decks mean you can move with the sun or the shade and that you have plenty of space for yoga or just a stretched-out nap. You’ll see the other horsebox, Martin Green, about 30m away, but the two share no facilities, so you’ll only meet guests when you’re coming and going. There are USB charge points but no mains power, meaning you can run what you really need, but are encouraged to simply switch off for a bit and enjoy the countryside, the birds and the gentle sounds of the river.
