Findern - Willington Circular Walk
A walk commencing from Findern village, located 5 miles south west of Derby.
For a more detailed map you are recommended to refer to Ordnance Survey Explorer 259 (Derby) and 245 (The National Forest). The walk is through countryside involving several stiles, fields with horses or cattle and a railway bridge with several steep steps.
Findern is a lovely village with a traditional village green and overlooked by All Saints parish church. During the mid 1800s silk weaving was a thriving local industry and in 1846 there were 22 looms in Findern. The ‘Fynderne Flower’ is a type of daffodil and thought to have been brought back by Sir Geoffrey de Fynderne from the Crusades. Although the name has died out, the legend of this flower is that it will never become extinct and some of these flowers still exist locally.
Jedediah Strutt of Belper and Milford Mill fame, served his apprenticeship in Findern as a wheelwright. He became a partner with Sir Richard Arkwright who was engaged in cotton spinning. Together they established mills at Cromford, Belper and Milford.
All Saints Church in Findern was totally rebuilt in 1862-63. It retains some original decorative stone and an octagonal font from 1662. There is also a monument to Isabella de Fynderne who died in 1444.
The Trent & Mersey Canal had a dramatic impact on the growth of villages along its length and Willington village became a small inland port. At Potlock Farm lies the remains of transhipment basins that would have been used to take goods off barges on the canal before they were loaded onto trains. Today the canal provides a valuable habitat for wildlife such as Coots, Mallards and Moorhens. In recent years canal boating has become a popular way of life for many people or a unique holidaying experience. Willington Wharf provides an attractive area and a welcome stop with seating to take a rest.
