Melbourne Walk (4.25 Miles)
A relaxing and lovely walk through rolling South Derbyshire countryside, starting from Melbourne’s medieval market place in Castle Square. Melbourne Hall and the Parish Church of St Michael’s, are passed in the early part of the walk. Melbourne Pool with its beautiful setting has an abundance of wildlife which attracts most visitors.
After leaving Melbourne behind the walk passes through farming countryside. The view of Breedon Church, just over the border in Leicestershire is very impressive. As is the glimpse of ‘The Birdcage’, a marvelous piece of wrought iron work by Robert Bakewell, seen as you pass Melbourne Hall and Gardens near the end of the walk.
For a more detailed map you may wish to refer to Ordnance Survey Explorer 245: The National Forest.
The walk is relatively flat with several stiles. Note: the route can be muddy in places.
Melbourne is easily reachable on the B587, just off the A514 Derby to Swadlincote road.
